Activities held during European Mobility Week 2015

Mqabba Band Club NGO

Do the Right Mix Campaign was celebrated in Mqabba with various activities held at the parish square promoting sustainable transport and living; the parish square was closed for traffic on the day thus offering a safe, clean and healthy environment. The activities were organised by the Socjeta Muzikali Madonna tal-Gilju and, among many activities, featured a cycling rodeo for children and an electric vehicle exhibition.

Gharb Local Council

As part of the Do THE RIGHT MIX Campaign, Gharb Local Council closed Pjazza Zjara tal-Madonna to traffic to encourage alternative use of transport, particularly walking, within the town centre. The Primary School participated in this event by organizing the morning assembly in the square and students were encouraged to go to the square on foot. The Local Council hosted also a workshop on cycling safety in the main square which was pedestrianised for the day.

Her Excellency the President of Malta Marie Louise Coleiro Preca opened the program of snooker games competition where each participant donated to the Malta Community Chest Fund. She also played the first cue of the game. Special guest Brian Cini, two-time Under 17 European Snooker Championship Winner, was also present for this activity.

Over 350 people attended this event which was held on 30th October.

Bormla Local Council

 


Between the 26th and 30th October, Bormla Local Council offered free electric taxi services from all parts of Bormla to the centre.
 

Birgu Local Council

 

On 1st November, Birgu Local Council hosted several activities in the city core which was entirely closed for traffic on the day. Activities included walking tours and electric vehicle tours around Birgu’s historical centre, electric cars and antique bicycles exhibitions, dghajsa tal-pass transport from Birgu to Valletta and Isla was offered on discounted prices on the day.

Bicycle Rodeo for young cyclists

A Bicycle Rodeo was held at Transport Malta's Head Office. This activity, part of the European Mobility Week, was organised with the collaboration and support of the Bicycle Advocacy Group and the Malta Cycling Federation.

National Car Free Day

  • St. Anne’s Street was closed for vehicular traffic from 9.00am onwards.
  • The Park and Ride Service from Floriana to the city centre was free of charge.
  • The Barrakka Lift was also free of charge for everyone on the day. 
  • The Valletta Ferry Service operated at reduced fares with ferry departures every 30 minutes from Valletta, Sliema, Isla and Bormla.
